360 VR! Big Creek to Johnson Creek Idaho RANS S-21
For the flight sim / virtual reality backcountry dreamers out there--this one's for you! Immersive scenic flight through the Salmon River / Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. Or if you're planning on actually flying into Johnson Creek (3U2), this will give you a great view of the approach and landing. Even though I initially approach Johnson Creek from the north, I come up initial / upwind and turn crosswind to join a left downwind landing to the south so you'll see everything except Wapiti Meadows.
If you'd like more of this content, let me know and if it negatively affects the algorithm maybe I'll start a second channel with just this content.

This marks a big milestone. It's been 3 years since I started building this RANS S-21 "Backcountry Bogey" and it hasn't truly earned it's nickname...until now. It was truly an adventure from crazy weather to bad airmanship decisions. Regardless, I survived to fly another day and learned a ton about backcountry aviation. It's amazing how much I still have to learn about backcountry aviation. Thi...

Clarification-The squawks I talk about in the video were not known until I debriefed this flight with myself. I WOULD NOT KNOWINGLY TAKE THESE SQUAWKS INTO THE BACKCOUNTRY. While this is a brand new airplane fresh out of Phase 1 flight test and a recent ADAHRS swap, I thought everything was “Code 1.” I was fat, dumb, & happy with a 900-1,000rpm idle. This trip really forced me to become intimat...

    Nmm. Let's say I was on active duty in the Air Force and started my latest Med Cert application in July 2023 with--obviously--no disability to disclose. That application was referred to the FAA for a condition--obviously--unrelated to any VA disability. I subsequently retired in April 2024 while the FAA Med Cert application was still "under review" for the aforementioned condition and later received a 70+% VA rating in June 2024, potentially placing me squarely in "Bucket 3." Should the FAA grant my Med Cert, can we assume that rational minds will prevail here and the FAA will not later see me as having falsified my Med Cert application? To proactively "remediate" this, if necessary, should I submit another MedExpress application or wait until it is time to renew my yet-to-be-approved Med Cert?

    Did you ever do an engine comparison video? I'm curious why you didn't go with the Rotax 915 IS (or 916) since it seems like you are planning to do a fair amount of mountain flying. My thinking (so far) is that if I'm doing a lot of mountain flying, I want the same horsepower regardless of density altitude.... but I'm open to someone changing my mind.

    Thanks for the beautiful footage. Just wondering why you chose to overfly the field at Johnson Creek and then whipping a 180 to enter downwind vs. a long straight-in final that was more or less aligned with your route coming in? Terrain considerations?

    • @CLEAREDDIRECT
      @CLEAREDDIRECT 3 дня назад

      Great question! In short, it's SOP for Johnson Creek as outlined here itd.idaho.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/JohnsonCreek_SOP_Aero.pdf The reason they discourage straight-ins from Yellow Pine is that you can't hear or be heard to know if someone is taking off beak-to-beak. Plus it's always best to "shop the field" and take a look at the conditions (water? wildlife? other aircraft? wind?) before committing to an approach. Thanks for the question!

    In my humble opinion regarding your check list at the end, the first point should be: get your aircraft in working order before leaving the ground. If your idle is high, AoA indication is off and your pitot/air speeds are reading different/wrong I think it's alright to consider your aircraft, experimental or otherwise, not air-worthy. Winds and airfield location just increased the danger but at the end of the day, with the known pre-existing mechanical conditions, it was only a matter of time before you got into a scary situation. You're clearly a talented pilot when it comes to flying the aircraft and I'd encourage you to extend that to tempering the steel set of balls that convinced you to take off in the first place. Glad you're safe. Great and informative video.
